Decoding Electric Vehicles’ Sustainability

Challenge:

The global initiative to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius by 2050 has intensified the focus on electric passenger vehicles as a promising solution. However, the source of electricity powering these vehicles, potential rebound effects, and challenges in adoption pose significant obstacles.

Solutions:

In addressing the air pollution crisis in India, particularly in metropolitan cities with a burgeoning population, electric vehicles emerge as a potential solution. Despite higher initial costs, governments worldwide promote EVs for their environmental benefits, including zero tailpipe emissions and reduced greenhouse gases.  (combustion). Additionally, it assesses the total distance travelled by electric and traditional two-wheelers, aiming to discern the potential rebound effect.

Results:

While EVs present a promising solution, challenges such as affordability, limited infrastructure, and range anxiety exist. The studies delve into the challenges consumers and the government face in promoting EVs, including increased electricity demand, charging station accessibility, and overall affordability. As the world aims for zero-emission cars by 2050, the papers underscore the need for a comprehensive understanding of EV sustainability and the potential hurdles hindering the achievement of this ambitious goal. As the products get better and improvement in the infrastructure, as a company we have made a commitment to replace our ICE vehicles with EVs anh Petrol Hybrid vehicles. In the year 2023, VTT was able to replace 25% of the ICE fleet with EVs for a leading IT Giant where it provides managed mobility services.
